Why it matters

Cooler nights drive roof rats and house mice indoors. Here's how to spot an infestation early — and why DIY baits often make things worse.

Rats and mice are responsible for chewed wiring, contaminated food, attic damage and serious health risks including leptospirosis and salmonella. From late March onwards, rodents move from paddocks and creek lines into Penrith roof voids and subfloors looking for warmth.

The two species we treat most often are the Black Rat (roof rat) — agile climbers that nest in ceilings and wall cavities — and the House Mouse, which prefers cupboards, pantries and laundry areas. Norway rats are less common but appear near drains and chicken coops.

Look for droppings the size of a grain of rice, gnaw marks on skirting and food packets, rub marks along beams, a faint ammonia odour in the roof, and scratching sounds at night. By the time you hear them, the colony is usually well established.

The real cost of doing nothing

Small pest problems rarely stay small in Penrith's climate. Cockroaches can contaminate food areas, rodents can damage wiring and insulation, and termites can keep eating structural timber long before the damage is visible. A proactive inspection or treatment costs a fraction of a major infestation.

DIY supermarket baits often kill rodents in inaccessible voids — leading to weeks of decomposition smell and secondary fly issues. Worse, second-generation anticoagulants are highly toxic to pets, owls and reptiles. Our program uses tamper-resistant lockable bait stations, sealed entry-point proofing and follow-up monitoring.

Combine treatment with exclusion: seal gaps larger than a 10c coin around pipes, vents and eaves; trim branches 1m clear of the roofline; store pet food in metal bins; and clear dense vegetation against external walls. Book a rodent inspection on 0400 733 222.
